Odissi dance originated from Orissa state of India, located on the eastern coast of central India. Odissi dance is performed with the primary theme of divinity, love and devotion for Lord Krishna and Radha. Odissi dance rhythm, Bhangis and graceful Mudras including Tandava & Lasya elements within Navatala system make it a distinct style of its own. “Tabu” & “Pallavi” is most famous sculptural poses and dance style practiced in Odissi dance with sacred verses from the ‘Gita-Govind’ narrated as the main part of lyrics. The ‘Ashtapadi’ & ‘Moksha (salvation) is also an important part where Odissi dancers pays homage to God, to the Guru - spiritual teacher and to the audience before ending the performance. There are three major gharanas of Odissi dance practiced in Odisha including Guru Pankaj Charan Das gharana, Guru Debaprasad Das gharana and Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra gharana.
